Ashlynn stared blankly at the woman in front of her. She was average looking, the kind of person the majority of people didn't think was a disgusting troll nor breathtakingly beautiful. A nurse. Yes, this woman was a nurse or a helper of some sort. Staff. Not the kind of person Ashlynn liked to talk with. The nurse smoothed a dark brown flyaway hair back into place and cleared her throat. "Come with me, honey." she said again. Ashlynn nodded and stood up slowly, giving the nurse a glare for her choice of words. Pet names had always bothered her. They seemed so silly, so superficial. Who would want to be called 'honey'? Honey was sticky and sweet, good only for helping a sore throat. The nurse had already began walking away by the time Ashlynn snapped out of her thoughts. She sped her pace to catch up, keeping at a distance. The last thing she needed was to be labeled and made fun of for making friends with the staff.
Eventually, they stopped at a door. The nurse pulled out a huge set of keys and stuck one into the door, twisting it around in the lock. It opened with a creak and Ashlynn stepped inside the room. There weren't a whole lot of people. It looked to be some sort of a recreation room. There was a shabby TV stuck in the corner surrounded by shelves of movies. A few groups of people sat along the sides of the room playing board games and the like. She nerviously twirled a piece of hair around her finger. It used to be pink, but it faded. Now it was a bleached white with small bits of pink left. She sighed. Dying her hair was one of the few things she actually enjoyed. Extreme changes helped her keep her mind off the cutting, if only for a little while. It also helped that her mother hated it.
She sat down on a torn brown couch and started picking the lose threads off. With the other hand she pulled over a nearby coffee table and put her feet on it. Looking around, she began to feel a bit sad. Everybody else was with somebody and her she was, alone. "If I'm going to be alone, at least I'll be comfortable" she said under her breath, casting a glance at everybody else sitting on the hard plastic chairs. Maybe being alone wasn't such a bad thing after all.

"Hey, c'mon. We don't have all day." A rough voice said harshly. Elizabeth jumped. She was somewhere else again, an escape tactic that she's used over the years. She turned to her left to look at a thick-built man staring at her expectantly. His brown eyes held no sympathy or softness whatsoever. He sharply gestured to a darkly lit hallway. She looked down, avoiding his sickening eyes, and followed him quickly down the hall. She couldn't help but wonder why in the hell would this man choose a job in which he had to be with people who were clearly in need of help if he hated people so much, which he obviously did. The hallway smelt of mildew and dirt, like no one had bothered to clean it in a very long time. When she glanced up, she could see two large doors down the way. She had no idea what kind of people would be behind them, and the thought scared her. She had heard of murders and rapists in here. Her fists clenched, trying to block the memories. But she took a couple deep breaths and calmed herself down. She had to be strong for this.
When they approached the door, the man pulled out a ring of keys, jangling from his belt loop. He pushed on sliver key into the hole, and with a loud click, the door unlatched. Elizabeth began to walk in, but the man held out an arm to stop her. "One thing to remember, girl. No funny business. I mean it." He warned before letting her slip into the room. She just looked at him before strolling into the room.
The room was huge, and a few people were scattered here and there. It smelt better in here than the hallway, but not much. Most of the people were in groups, talking, dancing, playing games, which should have seemed happy but wasn't. There was an overall feeling of sadness here. The double doors slammed behind her and that was it. She was trapped in here, with no escape. No one said anything about getting out. She knew most of these souls were not even aware she was here, but she still felt intimidated by all these people. She looked to her right to see a woman pulling out her own hair in tufts, and made a decision to go left. Everyone who was sort of sane seemed to be with someone. Then she saw a girl who looked around her age sitting on a brown couch, pulling out the threads. She seemed normal enough. Elizabeth walked over to the couch and stood in front of it, timidly pointing to the empty space on the other side. She used all of her courage to say quietly, "Um, hi. Is someone sitting here?"

Just as she was about to fall asleep from utter boredom, the sound of light footsteps on the dirty linoleum pulled her out of her thoughts. Ashlynn opened her eyes to see a girl with long blonde hair. Timidly, she pointed to the empty spot on the couch and asked of anybody was sitting there.
Ashlynn stared at her for a moment, deciding if she was being genuine or not. But she seemed nice enough and even close to her age. "Nope. You-" she nervously pulled out more of the frayed couch threads. "You can sit there, if you like." Ashlynn tried to muster a smile and she patted the spot. A cloud of dust came out of the couch, leaving the air with the same musty smells as the hallways. She waved away the dirty air and covered her face. A group of senile old ladies that where playing a very intense game of bingo a few feet from the couch turned to glare, muttering about 'Stupid kids, always playing in the dirt'. Ashlynn turned to the girl in front of her and raised her eyebrows.
"Well, you don't look crazy at least," she mumbled. Of course, appearances weren't everything. This girl could be a psycho killer for all Ashlynn knew. But the mystery only made it that much more fun.

Relieved that the girl on the couch didn't scream at her or do some other crazy thing, Elizabeth slowly sat down on the couch and shook her head. "..No, I'm not crazy. My uh, my parents shipped me here because they couldn't handle the stress." As soon as she said it, she was shocked at herself. An entire sentence to a complete stranger, who herself could be crazy. But, she didn't seem like it. She just seemed kind of sad, like deeply sad, as if she's been through a lot of bad things in her life. Or maybe Elizabeth was just mis-reading people again.
Elizabeth glanced around the room, to the shrieking old ladies, the men punching the walls, the people talking to themselves, and all the other poor souls that wound up in a place like this. She was glad that she chose to sit here. "I mean, you don't look crazy either. I'm Elizabeth."

Ashlynn allowed herself a small smile when the girl sat down on the couch. The fact that she was on the right track to actually making a friend for once made her happy, provided the chance she didn't fuck it up. All she had done was sit, but still. Ashlynn had been fairly lonely in her first few days in the asylum, more so when she saw that even the crazy old bats had managed to make friends. The girl, as she had been calling her because 'the girl' never gave her name yet, explained why she was sent here.
Then, she gave her name-- Elizabeth. Ashlynn nodded and leaned back, releasing her tensed shoulder muscles. She knew her name now. At least if Elizabeth went crazy and tried to claw out Ashlynn's eyes or something, she'd be able to give the name of her attacker. Though, a voice in the back of her head told her that probably wouldn't happen anytime soon.
"I'm Ashlynn. You can call me that, or Ash, whatever you want." she forced herself to speak above a whisper, remembering all the times she had been called something else because she didn't say her name clearly enough and not having the courage to correct the person. "I'm not crazy either, for the most part." she smirked and nodded toward the other, much crazier, people in the room.
Looking around, she realized there wasn't really much to do. There where board games, a few movies that where probably ancient, and some books about god knows what. She looked back at Elizabeth, wondering what she was into. Maybe she liked books, like Ashlynn. "So, what do you wanna do?"

Elizabeth was glad that she responded so...normally. Like someone who wasn't locked up here in the loony bin. Maybe, if she can make at least one friend, her life here wouldn't be so miserable. Maybe. She had said that she wasn't crazy "for the most part", and that sort of interested Elizabeth. It was a hint of mystery, she liked it. She followed Ash's nod to the crazy old bats and grinned, lifting her eyebrows in agreement. There was people much worse off than them.
So her name was Ashlynn? Yeah, she could definitely see that. Ashlynn's name fit her perfectly. It wasn't a dusty old Victorian name like Elizabeth, it was new. Different. She wanted to tell Ashlynn that she liked her name, but she just couldn't. She was afraid of rejection or something- her doctors had said so.
When Ashlynn asked her what she wanted to do, Lizzie glanced around the room. What is there to do here? The board games didn't appeal to her at all. Nor the movies. There was a bookshelf in the back, which maybe had a few decent novels. It's easy to escape in the pages of a good book.
"Any decent books..?" She offered, pointing with her eyes to the bookshelf. They looked dusty and old, but maybe they had some Bram Stoker or Tolkien. "If not..we could just talk, I mean, I really know just about nothing of this place." She gave a little shrug.

Elizabeth motioned toward the bookshelf. So she likes books, hm? Ash had always liked reading. It was an easy escape into a much easier world, where she could let all her problems disappear. Until it was over, of course. But it would be hard to make friends if she was reading. Once you got Ashlynn hooked on a good book, she would lay there all day until it was finished. Elizabeth then mentioned how she didn't know much about the asylum.
"So your new here?" she said suddenly, without thinking. Ashlynn silently scolded herself. Oh, um- Sorry. I don't mean to be rude. I'm new here." Ravenwood looked like an interesting place. Everybody had a story, but they where kept secret. Unless you listened to the rumors, which where pretty full of it for the most part. But sometimes they could hold a bit of truth. Personally, Ashlynn was interested in the high risk patients. The ones who had done some seriously messed up stuff. The low risk and medium risk patients had stories too, of course. But hearing about other peoples horror stories where fun and the lower risk patients hadn't seen as much.
"Heard any rumors?" It had been forever since she had been, well, girly. None of her sleepovers back at home where ever like the movies, where the giggly girls sat in a circle painting each others nails and gossiped. That sort of stuff didn't appeal to her, anyway. But if she was going to be here for awhile, Ashylnn wanted to know what she was going to be sleeping in same building as.

Happy just to be having an almost normal conversation with someone, Elizabeth smiled. "Yeah, I am new here. I just got here two days ago. The only thing I heard so far is that there's a bunch of murders here..and, Her stomach lurched. .."Rapists." She glanced nervously around the room, looking for them. How could her parents send her to place where they knew criminals were? How dare they? She clenched her fists, knuckles whitening. She probably looked crazy now. Great. She released her hands and attempted a weak smile. Deep breaths, relax,She thought to herself.
Elizabeth considered explaining herself, but decided to leave it. She didn't want to scare Ashlynn away more than she thought she already had. "What about you? Heard anything going around?" Elizabeth was honestly curious about what kind of secrets could be hidden behind these brick walls.

She was relieved to hear that Elizabeth was new here too. The fact that she wasn't the only one confused about this new place comforted Ashlynn. Elizabeth looked around the room and looked a bit upset for a moment, but then she relaxed. Ash was confused, she didn't know what had upset the girl. Other then tilting her head slightly in confusion, she did nothing to mention she noticed the other girls feelings. It would be best not to ask.
Had she heard any rumors? Yes. A few. Where they believable? Not really. Regardless, she decided to share. "Well, I heard it's impossible to leave this place," she looked around for staff before quieting her voice and leaning in closer. "Like, impossible. Once you check in, you never check out." Ashlynn grinned and leaned back. "But I wouldn't worry about it." She didn't want to admit that she was a little scared even though they where just rumors and from mentally ill people, no less. But even the townies had whispered about how if you check into the asylum, you never leave.

Elizabeth's eyes widened. Now this was something she hadn't heard before. "Really? That's what they say?" Not that she believed it, of course. But the thought was a bit unnerving. She supposed she could see something like that going on around here, with how eerie the place was. This place had secrets, that's for sure. A cold chill touched her spine.
"Well, I guess that you and I will just have to see what happens about that." Elizabeth whispered. She was feeling okay, almost. For the first time in a while, she sort of had a friend. Or did she? Hopefully this girl wasn't just toying with her. She couldn't think of a reason that she would be, so she pushed that thought away.
Suddenly the large double doors swung open, and a tall man in a white coat strolled out into the rec room, eyes gazing over the patients. It was clear that he was staff of some sort. Probably a doctor or psychiatrist. He had bright blue eyes that darted around the room, doing full sweeps, like he was deciding everyone's fate.. Elizabeth got a sick feeling from him. Something was off, she could feel it.
When the man clicked his heels and turned around back into the hallway, she felt like she could breathe again. Her hands were shaking. Did Ashlynn feel the same thing? "Do you know who that man was?" She said in a hushed whisper. "He doesn't seem right to me. Is it just me or did he seem creepy to you?"

Ashlynn followed Elizabeth's gaze to what appeared to be staff of some sort. She could feel the tension and fear in the air and it seemed she wasn't the only one. A few of the other patients fell silent and remained so until he went back out the old door to the hallway. Glancing over at Elizabeth, she noticed her hands where shaking. She frowned. So she felt it, too. Ashlynn tensed her shoulders and brought her knees up to her chest, shaking her head 'no' to Elizabeth's first question. She didn't have the slightest clue who the man was.
But the second one? She was unsure. He did seem creepy but so did a lot of people. This was an insane asylum, after all. Without moving her head, Ashlynn scanned the room. She was scared, but of what? Nothing had happened. All the strange man had done was look around. She took a deep breath and thought over and over, 'Do not have an attack, do not have an attack,' A few seconds went by before Ashlynn realized she wasn't alone and she looked up to the excepting eyes of her new friend. Did she scare her?
"I'm sorry.. I-" she cleared her throat "Yeah, he did seem a bit off. What do you say we go investigate?" she winked and stood up, motioning for Elizabeth to follow. "We can follow him. It might be.. fun" It would be risky, but what's the worst that could happen? Sneaking around was something Ashlynn was good at. After reading countless crime books and crawling out of her window to go see her friends when she was grounded, she had to be. Looking around the room, she noticed something else strange. There were no staff members. Ashlynn raised an eyebrow and smirked. Too easy.

Elizabeth opened her mouth to protest, but then closed it. As scared as the man made her, she wanted to know more. There was an ache in her fragile bones, like she had to. She had noticed that the other patients had clammed up just like she had when the man walked into the room. But unlike her, they probably had a reason to. She was relieved that Ashlynn felt it too, that Elizabeth wasn't crazy.
She nodded at Ashlynn and stood up as well. She wanted to know more about this creepy man, and she was not inexperienced at being sneaky. She once went an entire two weeks without eating just by sneaking her food into the garbage when her parents weren't watching. They found out eventually, but it was a bit of an achievement for her. She was frightened but excited.
"Okay, let's do it." She answered. "But there is no way we are getting caught. Not in our first few weeks here, anyway. Be extremely careful." She looked around and noticed the lack of staff. Strange, but maybe it was break or something. Elizabeth smirked back at Ashlynn.
