Adjustment. Abuse. Substantial Emotional Distress.
Natalie had never been more depressed in her life.
She was under the impression that Ravenwood was more of a spa treatment center, a rehabilitational facility of some sort. She thought she would be in a luxury suite, with a counselor to help her through her issues... but this was so much worse than she ever imagined. The rooms were cold and dank with the horrible scent of mildew. She heard screaming at night, and couldn't sleep because she was beginning to experience what she could only classify as "night terrors" as a result of the strange things she'd been hearing.
This morning when her door had been unlocked and opened, she thought the woman had looked at her with hungry eyes. She was after Natalie, she could feel it. She stayed in her room, though she had been eager to venture out and try to find some type of normalcy. She didn't want to become anti scoial-- surely they would keep her in this terrible place longer if she did. She knew she would have to attempt to make a friend, or at least socialize to appear like she was trying.
An hour after her door had been opened for her, she finally worked up the courage to leave her small room. She peeked out into the hallway and didn't see the particular nurse anywhere so she stepped out into this new place. Immediately she was sick of the white walls, the white linoleum floors, the florescence of the white lights above. She felt a pang of anxiety in her stomach, a headache beginning to make itself known as she felt anxious going into the recreational room.
She spotted a small bookshelf and some chairs nearby and thought reading might help calm her. She picked one, War and Peace, by Leo Tolstoy. She carried it to the nearest chair and sat, opening it and beginning to read. It wasn't all that compelling, but there weren't that many people around to socialize with just yet.

Corey awoke to a familiar unlocking of his bedroom door. He had been a good boy lately and was off of lock down. Not that he noticed; he was using it to catch up on sleep. A small pain ran from one side of his head to another. Great, a headache first thing in the morning. He'd have to complain to a nurse or two and get some heavy pain relievers. The best part about this place was the fact that they'd rather give you drugs than hear you complain. Maybe it's the room, Corey. Get up...I wanna play. Voices. This new medication he was supplied was doing a very good job as cutting those shitty things out. Whatever, he'd talk to his doctor about it at today's session. Though, those lousy fools didn't know anything. The world isn't ready for you yet, Corey. I know, i know.. He had to get out of this room.
Slowly, Corey dressed himself, lazily putting on his black jeans and a plain white crew neck t-shirt. Typical outfit for another typical day in this hell hole.
Corey slipped out in socked feet, making his way to the rec room. He wondered who he'd find. There weren't many real crazy characters out at the time, so he usually could bury himself in his own thoughts without some wacko screaming at the top of their lungs. They're all crazy, you're just misunderstood.
When Corey entered the room, he was taken aback. A blonde girl he'd never seen before was reading, her posture was sort of stiff. A newbie! Corey grinned, he'd lived here longer than he lived at his own home back in New York City. He loved seeing the new people; learning about them; learning how he could subtly set them off and get them in solitary for a week...
"You're new." He said blatantly.

Natalie looked up as the man spoke to her, and was taken aback by his natural good looks. She had thought no one in this horrid place would look appealing to her, but she had been wrong. His jawline was strong and his shirt was tight enough that she could imagine a nice physique might lay beneath. "Sure am," she said, setting her book down and extending her dainty hand. She wasn't meaning to shake his, but rather for him to take hers and either kiss it or give it a polite squeeze. It was the southern way, and being a sweet Georgia belle, she was obliged to uphold her southern ways. "Natalie," she said, a dazzling smile across her lips. She was determined to be as hospitable as possible, and hoped that no one would be out to get her- that no one would make her afraid to be social. This was, after all, a place for crazy people and Natalie didn't belong here. She just didn't.
The pressure she was putting herself under was making her head begin to pound, the nerves and anxiousness setting in. She wouldn't classify herself as having social anxiety, but she couldn't help being afraid that no one would like her. She didn't really fit in here, with her perfectly manicured hands and shiny beachy blonde hair. This man before her looked like he was hungry, and she was sure she would soon find out what would please his appetite.

Corey's brows knitted together as he took her hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. Where did she think they were, church? He was amused by the dainty hint of an accent she had, how well it fit her evenly tanned skin and blonde hair. She's pretty, Corey..let's play with her. Shut up!
[/b] A few steps allowed him to reach the chair near her own. When she said her name, a small grin found his lips. Of course her name is Natalie. "Corey." His answers were short a gruff, the headache forming in his active brain was beginning to get to him. He began to rub his temples with his fingers, groaning slightly at the temporary release. "I've been here a..while...so if you have any questions, you can ask me. Don't ask the nurses or guards...they lie."That's a good boy, Corey. Tell her the truth....make her trust you.The voices in his head were more annoying than usual. He needed to talk to his doctor as soon as he finished learning more about this new addition. Corey had been locked up in Ravenwood so long that faces and names were elementary. The things he remembered were their secrets; desires and fears. The ghosts in the walls here had no faces or names, they were emotions, they were memories. Corey stopped rubbing his temples at a familiar sound; heavy boots. His big doe eyes looked up, staring hard at the door. They're coming to check on you, Corey. You don't like that, do you? They treat you like an- Shut up! Shut up!As if on cue, a guard's body blocked the only door. He gave him a hard stare, showing his dominance. He couldn't count on one hand how many fights with the guards he'd been in. Maybe older guards joked with the newbies that they weren't officially guards until they fought with Corey. He was an animal, a blood-thirsty animal. "Mr. Grove, you know you aren't allowed anywhere without first checking in with us." The guard spoke hollowly. Corey was always running off without permission. He hated the feeling of people watching him; he was paranoid enough as it was. "Have you met the new girl, Natalie?" He asked the guard, completely avoiding his statement. Corey gazed over to Natalie, smiling as genuinely as he possibly could. "Accompany me to breakfast?"[/blockquote][/blockquote][/blockquote]

She smiled as he gave her hand a gentle squeeze and watched him as he sat in the nearest chair. The size of him was a bit intimidating, as he seemed to have much more muscle mass than what she was accustomed to seeing on a man, but she couldn't say she disliked it. He was quite handsome. "Pleasure to meet ya Corey," she said politely. She couldn't help herself- she was born and raised into that legendary southern hospitality, so the friendliness cam second nature to her.
Natalie watched curiously as Corey rubbed his temples with his large fingers, and thought he seemed to be fighting something off- which seemed odd to her, but she didn't dare make mention of it. "How long is a while?" she asked curiously. "There's one nurse who I just know has her eye on me. I don't like the way she looks at me, no sir," she said, her brows raised high as she shook her head in a very matter-of-fact mannor.
Before she knew it, the doorway was blocked by a man dressed in uniform- a guard. She had seen one just this morning who had smiled at her in a way that made her skin crawl. She had made a mental note to make sure she didn't find herself a lone with him- ever. She heard the guard's words and stared at him with big eyes. Corey wasn't supposed to be here? That seemed unfair. Everyone should be allowed free time.
She quickly smiled up at the guard after Corey introduced her to him. She was nervous about being surrounded by men. For all she knew, they could be cornering her. She automatically stiffened at the thought, her expression blank as if to not give herself away.
As soon as Corey mentioned breakfast, Natalie snapped out of her little attitude. Her stomach rumbled at the thought of food- a bagel and cream cheese sounded great right now. "I'd love to, thank you," she said, smiling genuinely at him. She couldn't help loving his wide smile- he was quite dashing looks-wise. She stood and put her book back on its shelf, waiting for him to lead the way.
